Nose Disorders

Why can't I breathe through my nose?

There are several causes of chronic nasal blockage. Inflammation of the nasal lining is a common problem. This can be the result of allergies such as pollen or irritants such as smoke. Congestion from allergies tends to be seasonal although, here in Florida, these seasons can last for months. Mechanical blockage can also occur; examples are deviated nasal septum and nasal polyps. The exact cause of the blockage can be determined by an Otolaryngologist (ENT) doctor. Specific tests such as nasal endoscopy or allergy testing can pinpoint the cause. Treatment can then be directed to the specific problem.

Why do I have frequent nosebleeds?

Nosebleeds can occur in adults as well as children. Children can go through a period of time when they are prone to nosebleeds. Applying a small amount of Vaseline to the nostrils at night and increasing the humidity in the home will decrease the bleeding. In adults bleeding can be a side effect of blood thinners-both prescription medication such as coumadin, and over-the-counter medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and Vitamin E. High blood pressure, if not controlled, can also be a factor. If bleeding is frequent, an otolaryngologist (ENT) doctor can cauterize the bleeding vessel. This is usually a simple office procedure.
